Strong Winds and Rain Could Reduce Punjab Wheat Output by Up to 9%

Punjab's wheat crop is under severe pressure following an early March heatwave, unseasonal rain, and strong winds, leading to widespread lodging and concerns over reduced yields. Initial estimates suggest a decline of 7-8%, potentially up to 10%, from earlier production targets, jeopardizing national output. Despite Punjab Agriculture Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo's optimistic outlook for a bumper crop, farmer groups and revised internal assessments are more cautious, projecting output closer to 21 million tons, a significant drop from the previously projected 22.5 million tons. The adverse weather has also affected maize crops and mango orchards. This situation poses a significant challenge for food security and the agricultural economy in the region.
