Pakistan’s ex-Army Chief General (r) Abdul Waheed Kakar breathes his last at 89

General (r) Abdul Waheed Kakar, former Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, passed away at the age of 89. He led the Pakistan Army from 1993 to 1996, a period marked by significant political turbulence, and was instrumental in the 'Kakar Formula' which led to the resignations of then-President Ghulam Ishaq Khan and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1993, paving the way for fresh elections. Born in Peshawar in 1937, General Kakar was a veteran of the 1965 and 1971 wars with India and rose through the ranks after joining the Frontier Force Regiment in 1959. Despite being offered an extension, he notably declined and retired on schedule in 1996, a decision that garnered considerable attention. His death prompted deep grief from the current Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, and the military brass, who paid tribute to his leadership and contributions.
