SC orders tighter hospital oversight

The Supreme Court of Pakistan, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, has mandated significant reforms for hospital oversight following a medical negligence case. This ruling came as the court set aside a Balochistan High Court judgment and allowed a 2018 civil petition and connected civil appeal filed by Bibi Hanifa, who sought compensation for alleged medical negligence, also awarding her costs. The Supreme Court's directives aim to enhance patient safety by requiring regular inspections and visits to operating theatres in both public and private hospitals, with punitive action taken against any violations. Additionally, the court ordered improvements in training for medical staff and the establishment of more efficient mechanisms for addressing patient complaints in public hospitals. This decision underscores a critical move towards greater accountability and quality assurance within the nation's healthcare system.
