Colorado wildlife overpass cut vehicle-animal collisions by 91%, report finds

A new report from Colorado officials reveals that a recently completed wildlife overpass has dramatically reduced vehicle-animal collisions by 91% over the past 10 months. The overpass, a crucial component of a larger wildlife crossing system, allows animals like elk, bears, pronghorn, and northern leopard frogs to safely traverse a busy interstate. This system also incorporates miles of 8-foot tall fencing and five large wildlife underpasses, connecting 39,000 acres of habitat. The significant reduction in collisions highlights the effectiveness of such infrastructure in promoting wildlife conservation and enhancing road safety for motorists and animals alike, demonstrating a successful state-led initiative to mitigate the impact of human development on natural ecosystems.
