Soaring Petroleum Prices, Rising Poverty and Unemployment: An Urgent National Call for Solutions

Pakistan is facing a rapidly deteriorating economic situation due to soaring petroleum and oil product (POL) prices, coupled with additional taxes and levies on these essential fuels. This dual burden is severely impacting ordinary citizens, especially the lower- and middle-income segments, who are already struggling with low daily incomes, with 44.7% of the population living below the World Bank's poverty line of $4.20 per day. High POL prices have a devastating multiplier effect, increasing costs across all sectors of the national economy, including transportation, agriculture, food, and manufacturing, thereby leading to business closures, rising unemployment, and a significant reduction in citizens' purchasing power. The article urgently calls upon Pakistan's leadership, both political and the Establishment, to address this grave situation and find solutions.
