Living In A Risk Society

Chitral Today

German sociologist Ulrich Beck introduced the concept of the 'risk society,' where modern societies face risks intensified by technological progress, industrialization, globalization, and human activity. These risks, such as climate change, pandemics, and cybersecurity threats, transcend traditional boundaries. This article examines the concept at a micro-level in Chitrali society, where global risks like climate change manifest through floods and water shortages, alongside local risks for youth including drug use, motorcycle accidents, and online dangers. Furthermore, social and cultural risks emerge from inter-clan marriages and the potential for blasphemy accusations to escalate personal disputes, leading to a pervasive sense of uncertainty and fear in everyday life. This illustrates that risk in Chitral is not confined to natural disasters but permeates family, youth behavior, technology, religion, and social interactions.
